Windsor Sikh group donates to Street Help for 20th year

A local group supported by the Sikh community donated food, supplies, and blankets to the Street Help Homeless Centre of Windsor on Friday to support those in need.

The Windsor Sports and Cultural Centre, for the 20th year, delivered three vehicles filled with donated goods to the volunteer-led organization serving the city’s homeless population.

Christine Wilson, administrator at Street Help, called the donation to the Wyandotte Street East organization “significant.”

“This is a significant one for us because they’ve been donating every year for so long,” said Wilson.

“We need to, as people from all walks of life, get together for those who are the least fortunate. Our Sikh community does that. I’m always so grateful for their support throughout the year that goes unnoticed, as well.”

Among the items donated were 200 kilograms of rice, several boxes of coffee and tea, jars of pasta sauce, noodles, and cereal. The group also donated more than 50 blankets.

“There’s a lot of people with more money than what we have,” said Jatinder Singh, president of the Windsor Sports and Culture Centre. “But you have to have the heart to keep giving.”

Singh said the group also delivered 95 extra-large pizzas to the shelter on Christmas Day and Boxing Day.

“I’ve been homeless a couple times,” said Wilson. “It’s a very dark place to be, and any act of kindness brings hope and gives you that light at the end of the tunnel.

“So, it’s very important to me that we have other members of the community, and other cultures, who are always here to help us.”

During the winter season, Wilson said Street Help is always looking for more donated items that help protect the homeless community they serve from the elements.

She said the organization is always in need of more sleeping bags, winter coats, and boots.
