The old guy in this election is now Donald Trump—and voters are concerned about his advanced age. Voters are also worried about Trump’s mental fitness, according to a handful of polls conducted since President Joe Biden stepped aside and Vice President Kamala Harris took the reins for the Democratic ticket.
Now that the apprehension over an elderly Biden is out of the way, voters could be paying a lot more attention to the mountain of weirdness spewing from Trump on a daily basis.
Morning Consult’s weekly tracking poll spells it out.
“Compared with President Joe Biden, our latest survey shows voters nationwide are far more likely to say Vice President Kamala Harris is in good health (71% for Harris to 30% for Biden), mentally fit (64% to 35%) and a strong leader (48% to 38%),” according to the poll’s key takeaways.
New polling from CBS backs that up. Trump polls 2 points lower against Harris on “having the mental and cognitive health to serve” than he did in the matchup against Biden.
The same CBS poll shows Harris has a distinct advantage against Trump when it comes to being considered energetic and focused, with a slight edge on being competent.
Even more key is how Trump’s physical and mental fitness is playing among voters in the seven key swing states. Not only has Harris gained a slight edge in five of those states, according to a poll conducted by Morning Consult for Bloomberg in the last week of July, but the script has entirely flipped against Trump:
Thinking about the two frontrunners in the November 2024 election for U.S. president, Kamala Harris and Donald Trump, please indicate which candidate is described best by each item below.
Too old: Trump 53%, Harris 7%
Mentally fit: Trump 30%, Harris 53%
In good health: Trump 22%, Harris 54%
All of Trump’s weird ramblings about windmills, sharks, and the “late, great Hannibal Lecter” might finally be catching up to him.
