Two people were injured in an alleged clash between two rival groups at the rally of National Conference president and Jammu and Kashmir former chief minister Dr Farooq Abdullah at Government Degree College ground in Mendhar on Sunday.
During the clash, a person allegedly stabbed two people belonging to the rival group with a sharp-edged weapon.
Both sides had an old enmity between them, sources said.
The incident took place when Abdullah was addressing the election rally, seeking votes for party candidate Mian Altaf for the Anantnag LS constituency which is going to polls on May 25.
However, Farooq continued with his speech as no one on the stage could get a whiff of the clash taking place behind the last row of the audience.
As people in the last rows turned to the clashing groups to intervene, Farooq thought that they were leaving the venue and asked them to sit. NC’s Jammu province president Rattan Lal Gupta, who was present at the event, said he didn’t notice any clash.
Both the injured were admitted to the Government Medical College in Rajouri.
The condition of one of the persons was critical, doctors said.
