Trump says 2024 election will be ‘single most important day in history of our country’
Donald Trump has filed an $91.63m bond in response to the E Jean Carroll defamation ruling against him ahead of Monday’s deadline, also officially appealing the verdict and asking for a stay of the judgement.
His filing did not include any details about the source of the bond, however.
On Thursday night, the former president posted a running commentary on Truth Social about Joe Biden’s fiery State of the Union address, which was partially marred by technical glitches and saw him fail to lay a glove on the commander-in-chief.
President Biden delivered an energetic performance that included blistering attacks on Mr Trump, particularly concerning his stranglehold over the Republican Party having a negative impact in Congress and over his “outrageous, dangerous and unacceptable” rhetoric on Russia and Nato.
“This was an angry, polarizing, and hate-filled Speech,” Mr Trump sulked afterwards, without a flicker of irony given his own highly-divisive campaign rhetoric.
Republican senator Katie Britt, whom Mr Trump has called a “fearless America First warrior”, delivered the official GOP rebuttal once the president had concluded his remarks but did so in a hysterical, melodramatic style that quickly went viral and was resoundingly mocked.

Seth Meyers reads out Trump’s entire rap sheet in breathless opening monologue
In an almost minute-and-a-half monologue, Meyers reeled off a continuous list of things Mr Trump has done, has been accused of and has coming up for him, all the while still coming out on top as the presumptive Republican nominee.
“Presumptive GOP nominee for president, again, for a third time, despite the fact he is a twice-impeached, four-time criminal indictee and racist who’s been found liable for fraud and sexual abuse. Banned from doing business in the state of New York for three years. Owes over half a billion dollars in fines. Took millions from foreign governments while he was president. Tried to extort a foreign country to interfere in an election in 2020 and encouraged another to help him win in 2016,” Mr Meyers started, however, he did not stop there.
The host said that Mr Trump “actively undermined a nation’s response to a once-in-a-lifetime pandemic and let a deadly disease spiral out of control. Is about to go on trial for breaking campaign finance laws by paying hush money to cover up an affair during the 2016 campaign. Orchestrated a months-long coup attempt that culminated in a violent insurrection to disrupt the peaceful transfer of power and install him as an unelected dictator. Stole classified documents and obstructed attempts to get them back. Has never once won the popular vote and has been routinely rejected by a majority of Americans in election after election”.
At the point you may think Meyers has covered it all, he reminds us of many other bizarre Mr Trump moments.

How the right wing politicised the murder of Georgia student Laken Riley
Pins featuring Laken Riley’s name and face were also emblazoned across her bright red blazer, which matched her “Make America Great Again” cap.
The MAGA Republican handed the pins out to anyone she could – including to the president himself – and made sure to get herself noticed as she heckled throughout his speech, calling on him to do as her shirt said: “Say her name!”
It was a deliberate outfit choice – and one that took the tragic murder of the Georgia student who went for a run and politicised it to push her brand of politics.
Last month, Riley, a 22-year-old nursing student, was attacked and killed while going for a run. She died of blunt force trauma to the head after her killer allegedly used an object to strike her, “disfiguring her skull,” before “dragging” her to a “secluded area”.
Police say her murder came at the hands of murder suspect Jose Antonio Ibarra, the man who was charged on 23 February with malice murder, felony murder, false imprisonment and kidnapping in the case.
The 26-year-old Venezuelan migrant was arrested for “unlawfully entering” the country in September 2022, according to the ICE. He has since been accused of shoplifting in Georgia and was allegedly arrested in New York. However, the NYPD told The Independent it had no record of such an arrest.
And so, in the wake of the attack, Republicans, including former president Donald Trump, have used Mr Ibarra’s status to exemplify the ongoing issue at the southern border and touted Riley’s brtual killing as a way to bolster their anti-migrant agenda.

State of the Union 2024: What Biden did (and didn’t say) about the climate crisis
Yet on the climate crisis, which remains a politically divisive issue in the US despite increasing impacts, Mr Biden made few remarks, and attempted to appeal to as broad a base as possible.

Biden caught on hot mic at State of the Union revealing his ‘come to Jesus’ chat with Netanyahu
“I told him, Bibi — and don’t repeat this — but you and I are going to have a ‘come to Jesus’ meeting,” Mr Biden said while shaking hands after his address, in footage caught on C-SPAN.
During his high-stakes address, Mr Biden announced the US military would establish a temporary pier on the Gaza coast for aid. Moments later, he also criticised Israel’s actions in Gaza, calling for the Israeli government to allow more aid to flow to Palestinians.
“To the leadership of Israel, I say this: Humanitarian assistance cannot be a secondary consideration or a bargaining chip,” he said.

Trump’s grip on RNC tightens as Michael Whatley and Lara Trump become new leaders
In her departing remarks, Ms McDaniel, who has been in the post since 2017, said “We cannot put our heads in the sand and ignore abortion and the Dobbs decision” in reference to the Supreme Court decision that ended the constitutional right to abortion.
About the 2022 midterms, she said, “Many of our candidates chose to ignore this issue,” according to NBC News. “We cannot win by speaking to an echo chamber of Republicans.”
“The state of our party is strong. Over the last year, the RNC has been building the road for our eventual nominee,” she added.
While the change in personnel was in the works before Super Tuesday, Mr Trump’s sweep of victories on 5 March, losing only Vermont to his former UN ambassador Nikki Haley, who left the race on Wednesday, leaves Mr Trump to get on with his general election campaign as the only Republican candidate left.

Trump’s daughter-in-law, Lara Trump, was elected vice-chair of the RNC, cementing the Trump family’s control of how Republican campaign cash gets spent.
Members of the RNC met in Houston, Texas to appoint Whatley and Ms Trump to the top posts.
Here’s the latest from Gustaf Kilander.

Florida classified documents case: Jack Smith calls on Supreme Court to reject Trump’s ‘frivolous’ immunity claim
The Justice Department special counsel has issued some fresh remarks in response to Trump’s lawyer attempting to dismiss the Florida classified documents indictment against him on immunity grounds.
Smith warns that Trump’s argument could lead to “sobering” outcomes and warns that, by his logic, a president could arrange to have his rivals assassinated or sell top secret defence documents to overseas powers:
“Under his view, a president could direct the Special Forces to murder his principal political opponent; he could accept a bribe in exchange for steering a lucrative government contract to the bribe-payer; and he could sell classified information to an adversary — and as long as he was not impeached by the House and convicted by the Senate, he could act with impunity.
“On Trump’s view, criminal immunity would shield not only a president who sold documents that contained classified information to an adversary while president; but also one who designated classified documents ‘personal’, took them with him after his presidency, and then arranged for their sale and delivery after leaving office so long as he initially took the documents while he was president.
“Trump has waited more than eight months since being indicted to assert his purported immunity, and the first time he alluded to a presidential immunity claim occurred only recently in a motion seeking more time to file pre-trial motions.”
