The Philippines’ Department of Migrant Workers is busy working to free crew held in the Middle East with news that some of the seafarers held there have been suffering from malaria.
Iran has seized a number of ships passing through the Strait of Hormuz in the past year with many crew held for months.
The last three Filipinos on the MSC Aries containership have just returned home having been held in Iran for the past three months, while Manila is still trying to free the 17 Filipinos from the Galaxy Leader car carrier who have been held by the Houthis in Yemen since last November. Three of these seafarers have recently been hospitalised, suffering from malaria.
The International Chamber of Shipping has repeatedly stated that holding seafarers against their will is in direct contravention of international law and an assault on the fundamental principles of freedom of navigation.
