RG Kar Rape-Murder Convict Sanjay Roy Sentenced To Life Imprisonment, Judge Says ‘Not Rarest Of

The RG Kar rape and murder case convict, Sanjay Roy has been sentenced life imprisonment by a court in Kolkata on Monday. Roy was convicted of raping and murdering an on-duty trainee doctor at the state-run RK Medical College and Hospital. In addition to life imprisonment, Sanjay Roy has also been imposed with a fine of Rs 50,000. 

Reading the judgment, Additional District and Sessions Judge Anirban Das said it is “not the rarest of rare case” and directed that the victim’s family be given compensation of Rs 17 lakhs for the death of the victim.   

On Saturday, the Sealdah Additional District and Sessions court declared Roy guilty of the rape and murder of the postgraduate trainee at the hospital on August 9 last year. 

The incident sparked nationwide protests and prolonged protests with junior doctors suspending their services in several cities across the country.

A former civic volunteer, Sanjay Roy was arrested by the Kolkata police on August 10, a day after the 31-year-old trainee doctor’s body was found in the seminar hall of the hospital. 

Roy was convicted by the Sealdah court Judge under Sections 64, 66 and 103(1) of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS). His family has said they will not challenge the court’s order and will accept whatever punishment he gets. 

During the delivery of the judgment, Roy pleaded innocence in the court claiming he had been framed. “Those who have done so are being let go,” he claimed, adding “one IPS is also involved in the case.”

Following a Calcutta High Court order, the investigation of the case was handed over to the Central Bureau of Investigation. The probe agency had arrested two more people in connection with the case, the former and controversial principal of RG Kar College, Sandip Ghosh and former Station House Officer of Tala Police Station Abhijit Mondal. 

Ghosh and Mondal were arrested on charges of tampering and altering the evidence but were later granted “default bail” by the same special court since the probe agency failed to file a supplementary chargesheet against them within 90 days from the day of arrest.
