The Delhi Police on Sunday arrested the prime accused in the assault and murder of a 36-year-old cab driver in a road rage incident near the Red Fort after a gunfight in North Delhi’s Kotwali.
Earlier this week, the Delhi Police arrested three others accused — Anita, 28, her step-brother Sajid, 19, and Salman, 24 — for the murder of Shakib on Monday night.
Manoj Kumar Meena, DCP (North), said Firoz, who was shot at, was suspected of having fired a gun and killed Shakib near the Red Fort and they were looking for him.
On April 21, after they received information regarding Firoz’s whereabouts, a police team reached Wazirabad. He was on foot, according to the tip-off from an informer.
“When he was asked to surrender, he fired a gunshot at the police party and the police team also fired back in self-defence. The accused got injured on his left leg. He was immediately shifted to the Aruna Asaf Ali Hospital for medical care,” said Meena.
A forensic examination of the spot has been carried out and a case under the Arms Act and section of the Indian Penal Code (IPC) pertaining to attempt to murder has been lodged, said a police officer.
The officer said Firoz is involved in 11 cases in Delhi and Uttar Pradesh of which two are about robbery and murder. The officer said he was also involved in an attempt to murder case in Sonia Vihar in 2015.
According to the officer, Firoz has been involved in crimes since 2008 and has been arrested 11 times, most of which are still under trial.
On his way home, Shakib’s car hit an e-rickshaw, sparking a fight between him and three passersby. As the fight escalated, Shakib was dragged out of his WagonR, assaulted and stabbed before being shot at. He succumbed to his injuries at a hospital.
