No. 11 Purdue shot lights-out on Friday night in a dominant 91-64 win over No. 21 Michigan.
Purdue led by as many as 30 points and never trailed in the game.
The Boilermakers shot 54.8% overall and 9-of-24 (37.5%) from three-point range. Purdue wasted no time getting the offense rolling. This lob to sophomore forward Camden Heide put Purdue up 29-9 less than nine minutes into the game.
Junior guard Braden Smith had a team-high 24 points (10-of-17 FG), seven rebounds, 10 assists and four steals. Junior guard Fletcher Loyer added 18 points while junior forward Trey Kaufman-Renn had 15 points.
A major discrepancy in the game was turnovers. The Boilermakers forced 22 Michigan turnovers while only committing six as a team.
The Wolverines were held to 37% shooting and only 6-of-29 (20.7%) from long-range. According to NCAA.com, Michigan was shooting 50.62% from behind the arc this season, so this was a rare occurrence up to this point for Michigan.
While four players scored in double figures, senior center Vladislav Goldin, who averages 16.4 PPG, was held below his season average with 14 points (5-of-10 FG).
Michigan (14-5, 6-2 Big Ten) will look to rediscover its efficient shot-making — 50.6% this season — when it returns home to face Penn State on Monday.
After suffering its first conference loss of the season against Ohio State despite scoring 30 points off 18 Buckeyes turnovers, Purdue (16-5, 8-2 Big Ten) added 29 points off 22 Wolverines giveaways on Friday night. Purdue looks like a team that can make a deep NCAA Tournament run, especially if it builds off Friday night’s impressive performance.
