Earlier this week, the Martha Gardens star gave a glimpse inside of her Maine summer home, and not everyone was a fan of her design choices.
In an Instagram post, the TV star showed off her recently redecorated living room, which included black and “creamy pale buttery yellow” furniture, a wall of bird prints, and a rustic table set that looked like it was made from branches.
While Martha said she “love[d] the rustic yet elegant charm” of the room, many viewers did not.
Some said it looked “old and stuffy.”
“It looks like a Marriott suite living room in 1987,” one person wrote.
Another said it definitely wasn’t Martha’s “best work.” “It feels empty,” they added. “Like no soul empty.”
Martha addressed the criticism she received in a subsequent Instagram post.
She wrote, “I rarely read all the comments that come in after I post but because I was so happy at the transformation of my Maine living room, I did go through many of the comments and was surprised at the harsh judgment so many displayed !!!”
Martha said it took her and her helpers three hours to swap out the furniture and when they were done, they “were pleased that the pieces actually fit the room and were proportionate to the large size of the space.”
“[This] was not a ‘decorator’s’ professional installation,” she stated. “It was an attempt to change quickly, and efficiently making a house a home, or a room a beautiful livable space takes a lot more than three hours.”
That said, she told fans to “stay tuned” for future design updates as she intends to add more “color, plants, mirrors, a new rug or two and other art and objects” to the space.
