The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued a yellow alert for thunderstorms with lightning as gusty winds are expected to blow at a speed of 40-50 kmph in almost all the districts of West Bengal on Tuesday. There will be a gradual rise of 2-3 degrees Celsius in day temperature, it said.

Thunderstorms, lightning and gusty wind accompanied by light to moderate rain is likely to occur in Kolkata, Howrah, Hooghly, North 24 Parganas, South 24 Parganas, Purba Medinipur, Paschim Medinipur, Jhargram, Purulia, Bankura, East Burdwan, West Burdwan, Birbhum, Murshidabad and Nadia. Light rain is likely to continue for the entire week at these places, weather experts said.
On Monday, Kolkata recorded 33.9 degree Celsius during the daytime, with the maximum humidity at 85 per cent. The sky remained partly cloudy with the possibilities of rain or thundershower to occur.
In other parts of south Bengal, the maximum temperature in Kalaikunda, Panaghar and Purulia was 37.5 degree Celsius, while that in Jhargram and Burdwan was 36 degrees Celsius. Krishnanagar and Bankura recorded 35.5 degree Celsius during the day time, the IMD said.
In the northern parts, light to moderate rain with thunderstorms and gusty winds are predicted till Tuesday in Darjeeling, Jalpaiguri, Kalimpong, Alipurduar, Coochbehar, South Dinajpur, North Dinajpur and Malda.
The maximum temperature in Darjeeling on Monday was 20.8 degrees, while Kalimpong recorded 23.5 degree Celsius. Districts such as Coochbehar, Jalpaiguri and Alipurduar recorded 33 degree Celsius, while Balurghat recorded 37 degree Celsius.
