I’ve lived in Bali for some time now and one of the first things I set out to find was a good gym. I went to almost all the gyms in my area as well as many gyms outside of my area in Bali as you can read in my best gyms in Bali post. Since 2023, the gym scene in Bali has really changed for the better. Prior to this, the Body Factory was really the only name in town and had a monopoly on the high end gym space. Thankfully, competition has been injected into the market and there are some serious competitors now.
One of these is the Wrong Gym in Pererenan. This gym was only opened in mid 2023 and what a beauty it is. It’s located in the middle of Pererenan on the main strip next to all the beautiful cafes of Canggu. The Wrong gym is much newer with state of the art equipment and an amazing space.
You can expect the same crowd of people at both gyms, aka the Canggu Bali crowd filled with gym bros, influencers, girls wearing next to nothing, and everything in between. Nevertheless, I met plenty of cool people during my time working out at the gym so even though it might seem intimidating on the surface, the people here are quite nice.
Location of Wrong Gym
Wrong Gym is located in the trendy Canggu district of Bali, specifically in the Pererenan neighborhood. This is the digital nomad and long term foreigner hot spot of Bali.
It’s located on the main Jalan Pantai Pererenan nearer to the beach which makes it very centrally located. I absolutely love the Pererenan area as you don’t get the same amount of traffic as in Canggu. However, this could all change in the next few years as ever more construction takes hold.
Address: Jl. Pantai Pererenan No.158, Pererenan, Kec. Mengwi, Kabupaten Badung, Bali 80351, Indonesia
Cost of Membership at the Wrong Gym Pererenan
The Wrong Gym is an upscale gym and it is priced accordingly. The prices are slightly lower than the Body Factory but nonetheless, you can expect to pay top end money for this gym. The monthly membership costs rival that of anywhere in the world, putting it on par with places in New York City.
The Wrong Gym Bali is broken down into two parts: the gym, and the recovery spa area. You can buy a membership to one or the other, or purchase their “VIP” membership which allows you to visit both. This is also the exact same setup as the Body Factory.
For a one month membership to just the gym, you are paying about 2.2m IDR (~$150 USD). For a one month VIP membership, you are paying almost 2.7m IDR (~$180 USD) which is among the most expensive gym memberships in the world. Really crazy.
If you buy a longer term membership, the price goes down on a monthly basis making it “somewhat” affordable”. A three month membership for just the gym is 5.8m IDR and a 12 month membership is 19.4m IDR ($1,200 USD).
Safe to say it was quite a shock when I first came here and found these prices in front of me. Everything else in Bali is super cheap as I’ve written in my cost of living in Bali.
The Workout space at Wrong Gym Bali
Finally, it’s time to move on to the real stuff. How is the actual gym at the Wrong Gym in Bali?
I think the gym is very nice. As soon as you walk into the building, you can really feel the attention to detail the owners had when constructing the gym. The theme is modern Japanese Zen which is apparent when you walk in. The sharp corners, circular windows, bonsai trees, and smooth concrete all add to the luxurious environment.
I think the space at the Wrong Gym is slightly bigger than the Body Factory with the equipment much less crammed together. The equipment is brand new with dumbbells that go up to 50kg. There is one flat bench, one decline bench, and your standard machines that are common at most gyms. There is a whole section of the gym dedicated to legs and glutes dubbed “The Boody Room”. There are squat racks, smith machines, and hip thrust machines here which are perfect for all the influencers looking to record their workouts.
On the third floor, there is a large outdoor area with views overlooking all of Pererenan. In this space is a jungle gym, pull up bars, sled pulls, gymnastic rings, and more. They also have many classes in this area which was annoying as the area was closed off in the morning hours when I like to work out. Working out in the Bali heat is nice sometimes as the heat really adds that extra bit of motivation and sweat to your workouts.
This area is mostly empty for the majority of the day as it is simply too hot to workout hard in the Bali heat. It’s great if you come in the mornings or at dusk and I’ve often enjoyed doing tire flips at 6pm at night.
On the first floor near to the locker rooms, there is small functional training room for those that want to deadlift heavy, as well as plenty of punching bags for those that want to get a solid boxing workout in.
The Recovery Spa area of Wrong Gym Bali
Similar to the Body Factory, the Wrong Gym has a spa and recovery area that has become a must for the Bali gym scene. The spa’s facilities include a swimming pool complete with sun loungers to relax, sunbath and get your daily dose of vitamin D, hydrotherapy plunge pool, an ice bath, and a hot tub.
This is an incredibly beautiful space that is also equipped with a common lounge area and a protein/smoothy bar that is pumping out solid protein shakes. It’s a very beautiful space that you can easily waste your whole day in (I’ve done this many times). The large outdoor pool is a perfect temperature for the Bali heat and offers a shallow lounge area (~10-15cm deep) that’s perfect for tanning while staying cool. Expect plenty of influencer types, crypto bros, and everything in between chilling out here on any given day.
There are also two smaller pools at various temperatures (7c and 40c) that are a perfect combination for the sauna. My regular routines on Sundays would be to sit in the saunas, then immediately go into the super cold 7c pool to get that amazing tingling feeling that I had in the spas in Sweden.
What I don’t like about the recovery area
My only gripe with the Wrong gym recovery area are the concrete tiles. They chose to make them a dark grey color which attracts an insane amount of heat. In the middle of the day, you will absolutely burn your feet walking on them. Similarly, they chose black as the color of the sun beds which means they are absolutely roasting to lay on.
The space is also slightly smaller than the Body Factory meaning there are only a total of 16 sun beds (6 in the shade) which fill up quickly on a busy day. While the space is extremely beautiful, something about Body Factory’s recovery area just has that nostalgia that I crave. While the gym at Wrong gym is much nicer, I might have to give the vote to the Body Factory recovery area!
Classes at Wrong Gym Bali
Wrong gym has a solid class schedule full of various work out classes. Many of their classes are on the outdoor rooftop terrace including HITT style classes, yoga during the sunset (With a view), and more. They also have boxing classes in the downstairs functional area.
I didn’t go to any of these classes but some were very popular. Make sure to sign up for classes at least a day in advance.
Is Wrong Gym Bali worth the price?
Wrong Gym is a very welcome addition to the Bali gym scene. Having lived here for awhile, it’s clear that the price for premium gyms will hover in the 2 to 2.5m IDR range for the foreseeable future. While you can always go to local gyms for a fraction of the cost, there is a market for the high end market that people are willing to pay.
Wrong gym has injected much much needed competition into the Canggu market. Along with other new contenders like Elite Fit and Obsidian, people finally have choices over the OG Body Factory gym. As a result, the Body Factory which used to be way too busy, is now not as busy as it used to be. The prices have also come down at the Body Factory which really leaves the consumer with all the choices.
Nevertheless, Wrong Gym is still cheaper than Body Factory by roughly 15-20% which adds up after awhile. Wrong gym has a nicer gym but something about the Body Factory recovery area still has me going. You can’t go wrong with any of the premium gyms in Canggu from 2024 and onwards!
