Former Legault government cabinet minister Pierre Fitzgibbon “made a mess” of Quebec energy policy before resigning from politics and the economy and energy portfolios, Québec solidaire house leader Gabriel Nadeau-Dubois charged on Wednesday.
Speaking to reporters, Nadeau-Dubois said that prior to the arrival of the Coalition Avenir Québec to power in 2018, Quebec had energy surpluses while it now records deficits.
QS MNA Haroun Bouazzi recalled comments made Tuesday to a legislative commission by Hydro-Québec CEO Michael Sabia, who said the government had chosen to prioritize the energy needs of foreign multinationals to the detriment of local businesses trying to decarbonize their operations.
Fitzgibbon’s cabinet successor, Christine Fréchette, now has the job of “cleaning up … this mess,” Nadeau-Dubois said.
“Who made this mess?” Nadeau-Dubois asked. “Who sold at a discount and in a couple months two times the output of the La Romaine (power installation)? It was Pierre Fitzgibbon. The reason we’re in trouble is Pierre Fitzgibbon …(he) made a mess of our energy planning.”
