Is October a Good Time to Visit Africa?
October in North America and Europe is spent preparing for the coming winter, but across many African regions, it’s the beginning of the summer and a great time for a safari. Of course, Africa is vast and covers many climate zones, but generally, a safari in October offers warm and dry conditions ideal for wildlife viewing. So, while the Northern Hemisphere cools down, it’s a great time to escape to the plains of Africa for pleasant and warm conditions across the premier safari destinations.
Tanzania Safari in October
October in Tanzania is one of the best months to experience a safari. Average temperatures range between 20-30°C (68-86°F), and the dry conditions make wildlife viewing ideal as the animals tend to concentrate around remaining water sources. Get the details on when to visit Tanzania.
Serengeti National Park
The northern region of the Serengeti in October is where you’re likely to find the massive herds of the Wildebeest Migration. This is the tail end of the most popular migration season, the river crossings. You may still catch herds crossing the Mara River on their return journey from Kenya on their way south.
Tarangire National Park
Large herds of elephant can be found gathering in Tarangire on an October safari, where the park’s permanent water sources draw them. The landscape here is dotted with towering baobabs – an iconic feature of this park.
October here falls outside of peak season, offering fewer visitor numbers than in July and August, but the wildlife viewing is still excellent due to the optimal conditions.
Ruaha National Park
The thin vegetation and low grass at the end of the dry season produce ideal conditions for the best walking safari experience in East Africa. The predictable movements of game in their daily pursuit of water makes for exciting wildlife viewing of both predators and prey.
Kenya Safari in October
Kenya in October offers excellent conditions for a safari. The short rains haven’t started, and the landscape is parched from the long dry season. Daytime temperatures in the high 20s Celsius (low 80s Fahrenheit) see the wildlife gathering around water sources.
Masai Mara
The herds of the Great Migration will have mostly returned to Tanzania on their journey to the south. You may still see some of the remaining wildebeest lingering here. Resident wildlife sightings remain exceptional around waterholes, followed closely by opportunistic predators.
Amboseli National Park
Mount Kilimanjaro really shows off in October mornings when the skies are crisp and clear. Later in the day, clouds may gather, but rain is unlikely. The dry conditions see the famed elephants heading to the marshes for respite – perfect for capturing photographs of these gentle giants.
Best Beaches in Africa in October
Kenya Beaches
October blesses Kenya’s Coast with ideal beach conditions, warm sunny days, and no rainfall. It’s shoulder season, so you can benefit from fewer crowds and better rates at coastal resorts. The best time to visit Kenya beaches is between October and February. A post-safari beach retreat is ideal in October. Diani Beach and Watamu, in particular, have calm, clear waters that are ideal for snorkelling and diving.
Zanzibar in October
October is one of the best times to visit Zanzibar. Calm seas, blue skies, and cool sea breeze are the order of the day before the short rains arrive in November. The calm ocean conditions ensure excellent visibility for activities like snorkelling and diving, particularly around Mnemba Atoll and the Pemba Channel. The steady winds make it ideal for kitesurfing and sailing activities.
Uganda Gorilla Adventures in October
October is the start of the short rainy season in Uganda. The best time of year for gorilla trekking in Uganda is June to September, and April and May. Morning mists create atmospheric conditions, while afternoon temperatures remain warm and comfortable.
Bwindi Impenetrable Forest
The beginning of the rainy season can create muddy and slipper hiking conditions for gorilla treks. While this makes things potentially more challenging on the trails, gorilla trekking is still possible. You’ll likely find accommodation and gorilla permits at a reduced rate.
Queen Elizabeth National Park
The rainy season arrives in Queen Elizabeth National Park in October. Muddy conditions, some impassable roads and wildlife seeking shelter from the torrents come with it. There are, however, fewer other tourists and somewhat lower accommodation rates at this time.
