ASTANA, Kazakhstan, October 7. 71.12% of Kazakh
citizens voted in favor of building a nuclear power plant, said
Nurlan Abdirov, Chairman of the Central Election Commission,
Trend reports.
According to the CEC, 28.88% of citizens voted against the
project.
“According to the data received, a total of 12,284,487 Kazakh
citizens were eligible to participate in the referendum. Of those,
7,820,204 people, or 63.66%, took part in the vote. The number of
citizens who voted in favor of the referendum’s proposal was
5,561,937, which accounts for 71.12%,” Abdirov stated.
To recap, on October 6, Kazakhstan held a referendum on the
construction of a nuclear power plant. President Kassym-Jomart
Tokayev set the date for the referendum on September 2, 2024.
In 2023, Kazakhstan’s Ministry of Energy announced that four
companies were leading contenders for the nuclear plant project:
China’s CNNC, South Korea’s KHNP, France’s EDF, and Russia’s
Rosatom. International organizations, including the International
Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA), will also be involved in providing
additional oversight.
