The University of Windsor and a local school board have agreed to share recreational facilities.
The university and the Windsor-Essex Catholic District School Board on Friday signed a formal joint-use agreement that will give elementary and high school students access to the Toldo Lancer Centre and Alumni Stadium during school hours. University students will be able to use some high school gymnasiums.

“While this new reciprocal agreement is one that will be of mutual benefit to both partners, we are particularly excited about what this will mean for our students, some of whom don’t always have access to such beautiful, modern facilities as the ones here at the university,” Emelda Byrne, the school board’s director of education, said at the UWindsor campus Friday.
Under the agreement, the school board will have access to the university’s track, courts, pool, gymnasium, and multi-purpose room at the Toldo Lancer Centre, 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. from September to June. The board will also be able to use the university’s outdoor track, turf field, and grass soccer field in the fall and spring.
When the Toldo Lancer Centre is being used for convocation, the university will have access to gyms at Assumption College Catholic High School and Holy Names Catholic High School at reduced rates. University students can also use those gyms on evenings and weekends from Oct. 1 to June 15, as well as the athletic field at Assumption from May 15 to Oct. 31.
“This joint-use agreement confirms our ongoing commitment to fostering strong community relationships and creating mutually beneficial opportunities for our local community and the university to engage with and benefit from one another,” said Linda Rohr, dean of the university’s faculty of human kinetics.
Hundreds of students from Assumption high school celebrated the agreement on Friday by participating in a Terry Fox Run on the track at Alumni Stadium.
For several years, the Catholic school board has held its elementary track-and-field events at the university’s facilities each June.
