A man has been arrested after allegedly attempting to abduct a child at an oval.
A young girl was reportedly walking to the toilets at an oval on the Stuart Hwy in Katherine, Northern Territory, when a man allegedly grabbed her about 6.30pm on Thursday.
The man allegedly grabbed the young girl by the arm and tried to drag her away, however she managed to escape and run to her parents.
Her parents reported the incident to the police, and a 19-year-old man was arrested soon after.
The man remains in custody on Friday.
Detective Senior Sergeant Michael Ordelman praised the young girl for acting the way she did.
“NT Police commend her for running back to known adults and immediately telling them what had happened,” Mr Ordelman said.
He urged anyone with information or footage to come forward.
“Detectives are in the initial stages of investigations and we are urging anyone who was in attendance last night, who has information, to make contact with police.”
