A scraggly and dirty Lalita Kayi Kumar, 50, was found in a forest this past Saturday in the Sindhudurg district of Maharashtra state in India, the New York Post reported.
According to the Indian Express, Kumar had moved to India a decade ago to study yoga and meditation in Tamil Nadu. It’s there where she reportedly met and married a man, living in Tamil Nadu until the relationship soured.
While an ID card found with Kumar’s belongings — which also included an American passport and expired visa — listed a Tamil Nadu address, the woman had actually been living for a few months in Goa, about 29 kilometres from where she was found.
This past Tuesday, authorities began an attempted murder case against Kumar’s ex-husband, who has not been publicly named.

When she was found, Kumar was unable to speak. She gave police a note which reported stated her ex-husband tied her up and left her for dead without food or water.

The handwritten note also indicated Kumar had medical issues, including needing an “injection for extreme psychosis which causes severe locked jaw and inability to drink any water.” The woman said she had been tied up for 40 days, although cops didn’t believe she was there for that long.
The woman was taken to Goa Medical College where she was listed in stable condition. Authorities are working to learn more about Kumar, contacting the U.S. Embassy for help, the U.K. Independent reported.
