Weide, who shared her footage and story with Latest Sightings, recounted the event. She and her group had left their camp early and were on a slow safari when they encountered the lions near a popular picnic site. Initially, they saw two big male lions, one of which appeared ill, and two females further ahead. A lone hyena emerged from the bushes as they were about to leave.
The lionesses immediately noticed the hyena and went into ambush mode. Despite realising the danger, the hyena was too close to escape. The lionesses pounced, and the hyena offered no resistance, surprising both the lions and the observers. The confusion was short-lived as the lions resumed their attack.
One lioness led the assault, bringing the hyena down and targeting its throat while the other lioness walked off. The male lions arrived, and the lioness continued to hold the hyena’s jugular until satisfied, then moved on with the healthier male lion.
Incredibly, the hyena was still alive but had no chance to escape as the ill male lion had already started eating it.
