In what could prove to be an enjoyable affair from the Stade Pierre-Mauroy on Monday night, Lille will welcome Lyon to town.
Starting with the hosts, while Lille might have suffered Europa Conference League heartbreak last month at the hands of Aston Villa, the Mastiffs have continued on an eye-catching domestic romp this season. With their sights firmly set on securing a lucrative Champions League ticket over the final few weeks, Paulo Fonseca’s men will know the importance of making another statement here. Last seen mounting a crucial comeback away at Metz as they snatched a 2-1 victory, the one-time Roma boss has seen his squad muster 12 points from their previous five Ligue 1 appearances. Opening April with a thumping performance at the Stade Pierre-Mauroy as they stormed their way to a 3-1 romp against historic rivals Marseille, Lille have enjoyed a real clinical flurry in the final third. However, despite suffering just a single domestic defeat over the past couple of months, Monday’s hosts are seeking some welcomed defensive steel. It is worth highlighting, Fonseca’s side have registered just a sole clean sheet from any of their last 10 consecutive outings.
As for the visitors, while Lyon might have found themselves at the heart of an infamous relegation scrap when opening the New Year, Pierre Sage’s men have come roaring back in a remarkable fashion. Last seen putting in a stunning performance on home soil as they secured an action-packed 3-2 victory against Monaco, Les Gones have continued to skyrocket their way up the Ligue 1 standings and remarkably now sit within striking distance of finding a route into the European spots. Making an immediate return to winning ways following a 4-1 drumming against Champions League semi-finalists PSG on April 21st, Lyon have won all of their other four domestic appearances across all competitions. Booking their spot in the final of this season’s Coupe de France as they secured a 3-0 romp against second-tier outfit Valenciennes, Sage’s men have also won six of their last seven showdowns on the road. Likewise, with eight of their previous nine away fixtures finishing with both teams finding the net, we are expecting a similar outcome here.
