Most of us are more than happy to welcome the warm weather of the Northern Hemisphere. Destinations such as Mozambique, the French Alps, Ireland, Amsterdam, and Iceland have ideal weather in August.
Whether you want to safari in Tanzania, explore the Irish countryside, sunbathe on Curacao, or hike in the Lofoten Islands, it’s the perfect month. The Best Places to Visit in August
French Alps
While much of France is in the throws of heatwaves, head to the French Alps and Lake District for warm, pleasant weather. Visitors can sunbathe along tranquil lakeshores or take a gondola to a mountain summit for scenic views. It’s far from the traffic jams, sky-high rates, and tourist mayhem of the country’s popular southern coast.
The mountain lakes of France include Lake Annecy, Bourget, and Aiguebelette in Savoie, and they’re wonderful spots for a cool swim. The picturesque lakes have equally charming villages, towns, and cities around them to explore. They present a wealth of activities to spend your days with a scenic drive, long walk, bike ride, ferry ride, or even a sail along the lake. The small city of Annecy along the lakeshore may be one of France’s most well-known and attractive cities.
The small city of Chamonix is an undeniable hot spot for visitors in the summer and winter. It’s most notable for its extreme mountain sports and trail running, but the views of Mont Blanc and the lofty Aiguille Du Midi appeal to all travelers. We have a soft spot for Chamonix and spent a whole summer hiking amongst the city’s towering peaks.
As with any region of France, food is religion, and you’ll find amazing alpine cheeses and farm-fresh products in restaurants. You’ll find small family-run establishments that offer delicious food for an affordable price. Most notable for the Savoie region are fondue savoyarde and raclette — our favorite spot for fondue is at La Crémerie des Aiguilles just outside of Chamonix.
Curacao
The Caribbean is largely a gamble to visit in late summer due to the high temperatures and risk of a hurricane. However, islands further south, such as Curacao, are largely out of the hurricane belt and are a good choice in August. The island nation has historic towns, rugged covers, and idealistic beaches. Willemstad, the main port city, looks like a miniature Amsterdam with colorfully painted Dutch colonial buildings along St. Anna Bay.
Outside the port city, the landscape is a desert with aloe and mesquite plants that dot limestone outcroppings. Curacao’s draw is its powdery white sand beaches and azure waters, as with anywhere in the Caribbean. The reefs around the island make for interesting diving and snorkeling, thanks to its bountiful marine life. Some of the best beaches on the island include Playa Kenepa Grandi, Blue Bay Beach, and Kokomo Beach.
Lofoten Islands
Few scenes on earth are as dramatic as the Lofoten Islands of northern Norway. It’s a hot spot for photographers in the summer, as long days and landscapes are a constant source of inspiration. Given their far northerly location in the Arctic Circle, they provide a unique chance to witness rare arctic wildlife.
The island chain comprises six main islands, but it has hundreds more that are largely unpopulated and ripe for exploration. Exploring the islands on foot, by sailboat, or kayak is the most popular thing to do here in the summer. Visitors can soak up the local fishing culture that has thrived for centuries when you’re not out exploring. This is best done from one of the island’s many wood fishing cabins beneath the looming granite headwalls comprising much of the island chain’s landscapes.
While the weather is generally stable in the summer, it is still an island chain in the Arctic Circle with unpredictable weather. When the weather does take a turn for the worse, plenty of saunas and cozy nooks are ready for a book. Sit with a cup of tea or warm up with a hearty fish stew. The islands are famed for their bountiful sea and wonderful seafood.
Amsterdam, Netherlands
As a major city, Amsterdam is a surprisingly relaxed destination with near-perfect summer weather. Its iconic canals, cobblestone streets, row houses, pedestrian bridge, and centuries of history have drawn visitors for decades. It’s a destination that attracts every type of traveler as it can wear many faces.
Its exceptional luxury hotels, art galleries, shops, and innovative restaurants will appeal to the most well-heeled travelers. The city has cultural institutions like the Anne Frank House, Van Gogh Museum, and Rijksmuseum. While it’s clubs and relaxed stance towards recreational drugs, attract those looking to let loose with a bit of hedonism. It’s an especially popular city with young backpackers.
Amsterdam is a very walkable city, and most locals choose the bicycle as their primary source of transportation. It’s the perfect way to get around the city’s tree-lined canals and quaint parks. A summer day in Amsterdam is nearly impossible to top in any other city. Our favorite thing in Amsterdam is sitting on the canal side in a quiet neighborhood like Jordaan and enjoying a cold Amstel. Or you could do even better with a boat cruise.
Tanzania
Tanzania is beloved for its safari holidays, fascinating tribal culture, gorgeous beaches, and wild landscapes. It has the Serengeti, Mt Kilimanjaro, Lake Tanganyika, Ngorongoro Crater, and Zanzibar Archipelago, all worth visiting. Add the warm and welcoming Swahili culture, and visitors are in for a treat. You can climb one of the seven summits or kick back on a beach and embrace the idea of “hakuna matata.”
Tazania’s wildlife may be one of its greatest assets, with phenomenal safari experiences from Ruaha, Selous, Mahale, Katavi, Tarangire, Ngorongoro, and Serengeti. Summer is a great time to explore the outdoors in destinations like the Cliffs of Moher, Connemara National Park, The Causeway Coast, and The Ring of Kerry.

Mozambique is a destination for adventure travelers as the country still attempts to recover from a brutal civil war that lasted for decades. It remains one of the poorest countries in the world, and the infrastructure here is challenging at best.
However, those willing to work will find Mozambique an engrossing country. We still dream of its empty beaches, friendly locals, and delicious seafood. August is one of the best months to visit as it’s the dry season, and temperatures are cooler and comfortable. After a few weeks in Mozambique, it remains one of the top places we can’t wait to return.
The Canadian Rocky Mountain Parks
The natural wonders of the Canadian Rocky Mountain Parks are astounding. They are arguably some of the most idealistic landscapes in the world and make for a hiker’s and climber’s paradise. The most famous park, Banff National Park, continues to grow in popularity thanks to the incredibly photogenic Moraine Lake. The lake can only be accessed from June to October. August is, without a doubt, the best time to visit Banff. It is a beautiful summer month in Banff. Rainfall is low; if you’re lucky, your vacation will be filled with sunshine and long days. . Other spectacular alpine lakes include Lake Louise, Peyto Lake, Emerald Lake, and Bow Lake.
The Canadian Rockies are a lot more than just Banff National Park, as the mountain range is largely protected through a series of national and provincial parks that are all interconnected. These include Yoho, Kootenay, Jasper National Park, Kananaskis Country, Mount Assiniboine, Mount Robson, and Height Of The Rockies Provincial Parks. It all adds to a sprawling amount of natural spaces home to abundant wildlife. It’s all easily accessible from the wonderful resort towns of Banff, Canmore, and Jasper.
It’s the first month you can finally forget about winter in Banff, though you’ll still want to pack a packable down jacket and a shell jacket just in case. All the sunshine and melting snow turn the mountainsides into a lush carpet of greenery where wildflowers abound. It’s the time for long adventures, and big trail runs with nearly 16 hours of daylight. It’s high season and the season to experience the best of all the mountains offer. The downside is you’ll likely need reservations for the popular camping spots, and if you’re staying at a hotel, you’ll be paying high prices.

Slovenia
Slovenia’s crystal-clear lakes, rivers, and amazing waterfalls make it an excellent destination in Europe. August is prime summertime and is one of the best times to visit. We recommend heading to the Julian Alps and venturing around towns like Bled. If you want to enjoy a range of outdoor sports like kayaking, canoeing, paragliding, and horseback riding, August will provide you with long sunny days and very comfortable weather.
Fiji
If you’re searching for a tropical island escape, it’s hard to find a better fit than Fiji. Its 333 islands cater well to visitors after sparkling blue water, white sand beaches, and luxurious resorts. Divers and anyone who loves to snorkel will appreciate the archipelago’s fantastic coral reefs. Adventurous surfers can find some incredible surf breaks.
Fiji is truly a unique destination worldwide, thanks to its remoteness. The closest destination to Fiji is New Zealand’s North Island, which is 1,300 miles away. This means that the island’s culture remains distinctly Fijian, who act as excellent hosts with fantastic hospitality. Fijians are proud of their cultural identity and happy to share it with island visitors.
High season is in full swing for Fiji, as it’s the ideal time to lounge on the islands’ sandy beaches! If you plan to visit in August, booking a hotel in advance is a good idea as it is peak season. This largely concerns summer holidays, but if you can swing into the shoulder seasons of June or September, that’s a great idea.
Switzerland
August is the peak of summer season in Switzerland. Families (and everyone else) come to Switzerland to enjoy the August weather. Temperatures can reach highs of 23°C, and it never gets too hot. Tourists from all over the world will be visiting Switzerland’s top sights.
It’s an excellent time to escape the city and enjoy hiking in the countryside, skiing at the year-round resort Zermatt, or even taking a train ride to the highest train station in the world at Jungfraujoch near Grindelwald and Lauterbrunnen. Seychelles encapsulates what we imagine to be an island paradise. The island nation stretches across an archipelago that offers sublime beaches and pristine natural landscapes. Undeniably, the islands’ key attraction is their near-perfect beaches, such as Anse Lazio and Anse Source d’Argent, with their powdery white sands and azure waters. The towering granite boulders and tropical forests flanking the beaches add the perfect dash of dramatic scenery.
Beyond the beaches, thick tropical vegetation covers the islands. The forests provide an ideal home to many exotic birds and plants, such as the coco de mer palm, which has the largest seed on earth. Its marine-rich waters have amazing opportunities for divers and snorkelers. It is the ideal island retreat for those looking to escape. Some wonderful resorts and homestays on the main islands of Mahe, La Dique, and Praslin are certain to ensure the utmost relaxation. It’s not all about relaxation either, as the island offers excellent conditions for water sports such as sailing and surfing.
Western Austria
Austria’s western states of Vorarlberg and Tyrol are an excellent mountain playground in August. The rugged granite mountains offer expansive glaciers, huge summits, pristine alpine lakes, rolling meadows, and charming villages to explore. It’s an outdoor hub for climbers, hikers, bikers, and anyone wanting to soak up mountain goodness. Give it your best, Julie Andrews, and twirl along a mountaintop.
Some spectacular highlights include Grossglockner, Hallstatt, Zell Am See, Gosausee, and the Krimml Waterfalls. Two of our favorite activities in Austria include mountain biking and climbing via ferattas or klettersteigs. After a full day in the mountains, refill your batteries with hearty mountain staples and fresh alpine cheese. Afterward, soak in any of the numerous spas that dot the countryside. It’s not the countryside, as the cities of Innsbruck and Salzburg dazzle and captivate too.
Yukon, Canada
The Yukon, a territory in northwest Canada, is wild, mountainous, and sparsely populated. It is home to vast swaths of wilderness teeming with wildlife like bears, moose, caribou, and wolves. Our road trip through the Yukon blew us away with its dramatic landscapes and sense of wilderness few destinations can deliver. The scale here is humongous and can quickly humble even the most experienced outdoor adventurers.
The Yukon is for you if you’ve ever wanted to see Gold Rush towns and jaw-dropping landscapes in the middle of nowhere. You can even consider driving into Alaska via the scenic Top of the World Highway. One of the best times to visit the Yukon is in the summertime. We enjoyed a Yukon road trip in August. It blew us away.
The last few weeks of August mean the leaves are all changing, and the colors are out of this world. Seriously, look at the photo above! I’m hesitant to share this with you as I don’t want the Yukon to become too busy. Its beauty is still a secret.
Kotor, Montenegro
Kotor is a well-preserved former Venetian city inhabited by less than 13,000 people. Once visitors pass through the city walls, a labyrinth of marbled streets, old lamps, stone houses, and quiet piazzas await them. The old city is fortified and encompassed by imposing stone walls while the town sits at the foot of a gorgeous Adriatic Bay with the Dalmatian Mountains rising high above turquoise waters.
Some refer to the Bay of Kotor as being the southernmost Fjord in Europe, and with the stunning beauty of the bay, it is easy to see why. It’s a magical destination that feels like you’ve returned in time. We’ve been twice, and it still stands out as one of the most beautiful cities in Europe. Make sure to make your way down to the harboring village of Perast while there, as it’s equally stunning. The weather is wonderful, days are longer, and people fill the buzzing streets, giving this small town a new vibe.
Copenhagen, Denmark
The Danish capital city of Copenhagen comes alive in the summer months. August means long sunlit days and pleasant weather perfect for exploring the city’s picturesque streets and waterfronts. Like Amsterdam, the city is famed for its extensive network of canals lined with stately Renaissance homes. You’ll find it here if you’re looking for a warm and sunny destination with little humidity. These conditions are perfect for outdoor exploring; some days may even be warm enough to dip in the ocean.
With over 4,000 miles of coastline, you won’t have trouble finding a lovely beach to sunbathe, swim, or look for seaside treasures. The winters are harsh in mountainous Mongolia, but fortunately, summer is a great time to visit, particularly in August when daytime temperatures reach 77 to 95 degrees, and there’s little precipitation.
If you want cooler temperatures, the end of August is still nice, but the temperatures are lower. Mongolia has many national parks, including Terelj, Altai Tavan Bogd, Khustain Nuruu, Khorgo Terkhiin Tsagaan Nuur, and Gobi Gurvansaikhan. In August, many festivals occur, including Mongol Nomadic Naadam, Oirad Tumen – Western Mongolian Traditional Folk Art Festival, Long Song Singers’ Festival, Orkhon Valley Horse Festival, and Paradise Darkhan Dj Festival.
Borneo, Malaysia
Borneo is an incredible mesh of culture, nature, and world-class attractions. This huge island is mostly known for its stunning beaches, rainforest, and unique wildlife, and August is one of the best times to visit. With temperatures reaching 82 degrees and mostly dry conditions, it’s a great time of year for wildlife excursions and spending time on the beaches.
Some of the top attractions in Borneo include Danum Valley, Sepilok Orangutan Rehabilitation Centre, Sarawak Caves, Bako National Park, and Sipidan Island, where you’ll find the best diving in the region. Libur Land Festival, Borneo Arts Festival, and Rainforest World Music Festival are some of the top events in Borneo in August.
Greenland, Denmark
Greenland is close to Canada, but it belongs to Denmark, so it has a unique mesh of cultures and history. The Inuit culture possesses deep connections with the surrounding geography and fauna, firmly rooted in their way of life and they maintain strong bonds with fellow Inuit communities to the west, spanning across Canada, Alaska, and Russia.
It’s also positioned so far north that it’s always cool there, even in the dead of summer! August is a perfect time to visit Greenland because the temperatures are at their warmest despite still being cool enough to escape the sweltering heat that overcomes many areas of the Northern Hemisphere.
You won’t find large crowds here, either. What you will find is incredible scenery and many attractions including the Greenland National Museum, Scoresby Sund, Nuuk Art Museum and Northeast Greenland National Park.
Hvar, Croatia
Croatia’s dramatic coastline continues to increase in popularity thanks to its historic Venetian towns and deep blue Adriatic waters. One of the highlights of their coastline is the island of Hvar, with its lavender fields, craggy bays, and historic marina. It’s a refined island with a laid-back Mediterranean vibe that offers heritage and history.
The welcoming atmosphere on the sun-drenched island of Hvar is renowned, attracting celebrities like Beyonce, Prince Harry, Brad Pitt, and Tom Cruise, who have made waves with their visits on private yachts. From its seaside restaurants and beach clubs, you can dine on fresh Adriatic seafood and party late into the next morning.
